Creative Ideas for Your Rec Room & Bonus Room

February 23, 2017

In modern home design, the rec room and bonus room are fantastic additions to the standard home design. These additional spaces can be used in a number of ways. Below are a few ideas. We hope they inspire creativity as you make your dreams a reality in this excellent new space.

1. Creativity Space

If your family has a creative bent, the rec/bonus room is the perfect place to let it shine. In the rec/bonus room you have space to paint, sew, build, scrapbook and create as much as you want. Consider adding shelving to store all of the supplies, workspaces for each family member to set up their creations and a display area for the finished products. Since rec rooms tend to be one of the larger rooms in the home, you’ll also find plenty of room for storage for the supplies in your rec room. In addition, the rec room provides a place where the inevitable clutter from projects that are not quite completed can be contained.

2. Home Theater

While some home designs have a separate area for a home theater, others do not. If your home has a rec/bonus room and you want the luxuries of surround sound, cozy seating and a giant screen, why not transform that room into a true home theater experience? Add a big screen and projector for the ultimate movie experience, or simply contain your TV, gaming system, surround sound system and media center in one place. Add theater seating or comfy recliners to make a perfect retreat for your family movie night.

3. Toy and Game Room

If you have kids, then you know the struggle of keeping the kid clutter at bay. One way to help is to give kids a designated place to play, and the rec or bonus room works great. You can have fun and creative storage for toys, as well as a designated area for play. Instead of dragging the toys all over the house, they can play and store the toys in one central location, keeping the rest of the home tidy. As an added bonus, when the kids start to outgrow Barbies and Hot Wheels, you can swap them out for Ping-Pong or foosball tables and keep the game room alive. Don’t forget to create an area for board game play!

4. Home Library

Do you have a family who loves to read? Add floor-to-ceiling book shelves to your rec or bonus room along with comfortable seating to make an ideal reading space, and don’t forget the reading lights in the seating areas. This ensures you can keep your book collection close at hand, without adding clutter to other areas of your home. Before turning your rec or bonus room into a home library, make sure the floor can support the weight of loaded bookshelves. If there is another story below the library, you may need to add some supports to prevent damage to your home from the weight.

These are just some of the possibilities you can use to make your rec/bonus room exactly what you need and want it to be. Get creative, and you must might find that the rec/bonus room is your favorite place in your new home.
